Choose what happens when drawing stops

By default, stopping drawing throws the drawing away, and its undo history with it. You can change that so the drawing is kept and comes back the next time you start.

Change the setting

1. Click the pen in the menu bar and choose Preferences…
2. Go to Stopping.
3. Set When drawing stops to one of:
   • Throw the drawing away (the default)
   • Keep the drawing for next time

What each option does

Either way, your marks leave the screen when you stop, so nothing is left painted over your apps. The setting decides whether they’re gone for good.

Every way of stopping follows it

The setting applies however drawing stops: the red stop button on the toolbar, ⌥⇧D, Esc, or auto-release.

Kept drawings last until you quit PenLayer. Drawings are held in memory only and there’s no way to save one to a file yet.
